Indonesian Furniture: Overview

Furniture sourced from Indonesia is becoming more and more popular, and that's partly down to the beautiful woods that the country can provide. The end result - whether it's a dining room table, a book case or a coffee table - is often much better than furniture from other regions, and when you buy from Tangkoko you're purchasing an item that's ethically source.

It's down to personal choice whether the source of the furniture (and the wood that makes the furniture) is important to you, but in the current climate many people want to know where their furniture has been taken from. Every table and chair that's made from wood has to have come from somewhere, and the forests of Indonesia are just the same as any other country. The wood has to be carefully looked after, and it's important for many customers that the furniture that they have in their living room or dining room is well sourced.

What makes Indonesian Furniture so special?

Furniture sourced from Indonesia, or at least made with woods from that region, is no longer a secret - as more and more people buy furniture made from the unique woods of India, a growing band of consumers are turning to Indonesian furniture. The style of tables, chairs and desks are unique, and the deep rich woods used make for a beautiful living room.

Wooden Furniture Buying Guide

When buying wooden furniture it’s important to consider several things, here’s a handy guide which will help you before you have made your purchase.

  • 1) Budget – This should always be your first consideration as it will limit the choices you have when shopping in terms of the types of brands you go for. Also the type of wood the furniture is made from will vary in price for example Mahogany is more expensive than Pine.
  • 2) Where will it be used? – This is important as it will affect how durable etc the furniture needs to be. For example if you are buying a dining room table and you have a family its likely to be used at least twice a day so needs to be able to with stand this level of us. Or if the piece of furniture will be in a room that is rarely used and it is more of a “showpiece”. In this case durability is not as important as say style and appearance and you could spend more money on such an item.
  • 3) How long will you keep it for?- If you are buying wooden furniture it’s likely you will both want and expect to keep it in your home for a long time and it might even be passed down through generations. In this instance it would be best to buy the most expensive furniture you can afford, investing in a piece that will stand the test of time.
  • 4) What sort of styles do you like?- Everyone has their own taste and it’s very “of the moment” to mix different furniture styles in one room. Pieces of different style can add focal points and interest to a room.
  • 5) What kind of wood do you like? – Choosing between hardwoods and softwood will determine your wood type.
Hardwoods – Oak and tea – very heavy – used in dining tables and cabinets etc – very durable.

Fine hardwoods such as Mahogany, Walnut,Cherry, Oak and Maple are more expensive and delicate therefore used in finer furniture that would perhaps suit an occasional room.

Softwoods – Pine – Better for everyday use as it is still strong and hard wearing but not as expensive as the woods listed above.
